Services
Services for completed manuscripts include the following:
- Copyediting: a line-by-line review of the text.
- A light edit corrects all grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usage errors; makes style consistent for mechanical matters such as capitalization, numbers, and abbreviations; and identifies text that appears incorrect or inconsistent.
- A medium edit additionally tightens wording, identifies and suggests revisions for wordy or unclear text, cross-checks bibliographic references and footnotes, and includes a more in-depth look at consistency and logic within the text.
- A heavy edit does all that a medium edit does but also revises wordy or unclear text without a query and may suggest deletions, additions, and structural changes.
- Substantive editing: a minor to major rewrite of the text that eliminates errors, wordiness, and awkward phrases; creates smooth transitions; and may reorganize the manuscript if needed. The editor works with the author to resolve inconsistencies and improve clarity.
- Critical review: extensive notes on plot, character development, style, tone, and logical consistency for a work of fiction.
- Proofreading: a final check of the print-ready document against an edited manuscript to eliminate any errors introduced during typesetting or file conversion.
Services for projects without a completed manuscript include the following:
- Developmental editing: a collaboration with the author to develop a manuscript from a rough draft or an outline. The editor provides feedback and guidance as the author writes or rewrites. The author contributes subject matter expertise; the editor offers writing and editorial expertise.
- Writing: the creation of a manuscript for an article, a paper, a document, or a book that expresses the client’s thoughts and ideas. Ideal for the client who would like to collaborate on a project but does not have time to write.
